💡 Optimizing Your Tools: Next Steps After Completing a Tech Inventory

Published 6 months ago • 1 min read

Hey Reader,

Over the past two weeks, we’ve dived into the importance of taking control of your tech stack. I started with an introduction to tech inventories (read it here) and last week we explored why this foundational tool is crucial for reclaiming your time and sanity (read it here).

If you’ve been following along and started your tech inventory, that’s fantastic! Last time I shared a snapshot of the example sheet that's in my Tech Inventory Template and I mentioned that all you've got to do to get started is make a list of tech tools you're using. And, it's never too late to start - click here to make a copy of the Google Sheet template.

From Inventory to Action

Having an inventory is just the first step. The next step is to turn that data into actionable insights:

  • Review and Categorize: Group your tools by function to identify overlaps or gaps.
  • Analyze Costs: Calculate the financial impact for each category. Are you getting value for your money?
  • Assess Usage: Identify underused tools. Are they really necessary?

Make Informed Decisions

Your inventory data can guide several types of decisions:

  • Consolidate: Merge similar functions into a single, more comprehensive tool.
  • Invest: Allocate resources to areas lacking effective tools.
  • Cut or Replace: Remove or swap out underperforming tools based on your analysis.

For example, if you look at my snapshot from last week, you might have noticed that I am paying for Adobe and Canva tools. So even though I look at my inventory of tools on a fairly regular basis, it still snuck up on me that I've got major overlap in these tools and it's COSTING ME MONEY. I talk about it a little bit in the video walkthrough below (less than 5 minutes to get you up and running with your tech inventory).
